The update expands on YouTube’s existing screen-time controls, which previously allowed users to restrict shorts viewing to a minimum duration.
With the latest change, setting the limit to zero removes shorts content from the feed and replaces it with a notification indicating that the daily limit has been reached. The move reflects YouTube’s increasing focus on promoting healthier digital habits rather than eliminating features entirely.
While the feature provides greater control, it does not completely block access for all users. After reaching the limit, users are shown a prompt along with an option to bypass the restriction for the day. This means the tool functions more as a reminder to curb excessive scrolling rather than a strict restriction.
However, for accounts managed through Google Family Link, the limit cannot be bypassed. In such cases, setting the shorts limit to zero effectively disables access, giving parents stronger control over screen time.
Users can activate the setting by navigating to the YouTube app, accessing the Time Management section in Settings. Although the feature may not fully curb the urge to keep scrolling, it offers users a practical way to manage their viewing habits and regain control over how much time they spend on short-form content.
How to enable the feature?
Here’s a step-by-step guide to enable the feature:
Step 1- Open the YouTube app on your phone or supported device.
Step 2- Navigate to the ‘You’ section located at the bottom right.
Step 3- Open Settings and go to the Time Management section.
Step 4 – Tap on the ‘Shorts feed limit’ option.
Step 5 – Adjust the limit and set it to zero minutes (if available).
Once enabled, you will receive a notification whenever you try to access Shorts, informing you that your daily limit has been reached.
