According to the company, the proposed program ranks among the largest digital infrastructure initiatives under consideration in India and will span multiple states and union territories.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the announcement in a post on X, describing it as one of the largest proposed investments in India’s digital infrastructure ecosystem.

“India’s digital infrastructure journey is gathering remarkable momentum. AirTrunk has announced plans to invest around ₹3 lakh crore in India and develop 5GW of data center capacity. This is among the largest proposed investments in the country’s digital infrastructure ecosystem,” Modi said.
The announcement came after AirTrunk Founder and CEO Robin Khuda completed his first government engagement visit to India since the company entered the market through the acquisition of Lumina CloudInfra in April 2026. The deal provided AirTrunk with a 600MW development pipeline across Mumbai, Chennai and Hyderabad.
In an exclusive interaction with CNBC-TV18, Khuda said the scale of the proposed investment reflects AirTrunk’s long-term confidence in India’s growth prospects and ambitions in artificial intelligence.
“We’re not investing in where India is today; we’re investing in where India will be in ten years. Few markets have India’s combination of scale, talent, energy potential and digital ambition. The size of our investment reflects the size of our conviction,” Khuda said.
“The more we understand India, the bigger we believe the opportunity is. When you see strong demand, supportive policy settings and a government focused on enabling investment, that’s when long-term capital gets comfortable making long-term commitments. This is a long-term opportunity: we see India becoming one of the foundational markets of the global AI economy.”
During his visit, Khuda met federal representatives and state ministers in Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh. Discussions focused on the conditions required to support AI-driven growth, including reliable and affordable power, renewable energy, water availability, streamlined approvals and stronger coordination between state and federal governments on infrastructure projects.
“Capital is mobile, and India is creating the conditions for it to thrive,” Khuda said. “India is taking a top-down approach to AI with clear government-led initiatives, a world-class talent pool and massive availability of renewable energy. We were bullish on India before entering the market through Lumina.”
“Following our discussions with government leaders this week, we’re looking to double down on that commitment. We heard a clear message that India is open for investment and determined to compete for the next generation of AI and cloud infrastructure that will transform India’s industries and economy for generations to come.”
India’s push to attract cloud and AI investment is supported by the IndiaAI Mission, which has an outlay of more than ₹10,000 crore, and the India Semiconductor Mission, backed by ₹76,000 crore.
“Prime Minister Modi’s vision for India’s digital economy has helped create one of the world’s most compelling destinations for technology investment,” Khuda said.
“India has the scale, talent and ambition required to become a global AI powerhouse. AirTrunk is excited to support that vision through long-term and transformative investment, infrastructure development, community programs and partnerships.”
The planned 5GW expansion is expected to create tens of thousands of jobs across development, construction and operations, while supporting supply-chain localization and broader engagement with domestic businesses.
