A futuristic ‘human washing machine’ has made its debut in Japan, available for the first time in Hokkaido.

Nicknamed the ‘human washer of the future,’ the device first captured attention at the World Expo 2025 in Osaka. Developed by Japanese Tech Company Science, the capsule-style device was priced at approximately 60 million yen ( 3.52 crore).

It lets users lie inside, close the lid, and enjoy a full-body cleanse. The first unit of this Future Human Washing Machine has been purchased by a hotel in Osaka,
Travelers can experience the machine by booking a session at the Es Con Field Hokkaido Hotel Kitahiroshima Ekimae, where a 15-minute slot costs 12,000 yen (around 7,000) and accommodates up to three guests.

Once inside the capsule, users are immersed in water while ultra-fine microbubble technology cleanses the body, eliminating the need for scrubbing by penetrating deep into pores.

At a media unveiling, Japanese reporters who tested the device described the experience as deeply relaxing, with a warm mist enveloping the body and creating a ‘soothing sensation.’

What more does the machine offer?

Beyond cleaning, the capsule offers a wellness-focused experience. It plays customized music and visuals while monitoring electrocardiographic (ECG) signals to analyze the user’s autonomic nervous system condition in real time.

The 15-minute submersion forms part of Japan’s traditional ‘totonoi’ wellness routine, which typically includes a sauna, cold bath, the machine wash, and concludes with outdoor air bathing.

“Through this, we aspire to create a wellness-oriented society where everyone can live in good health and beauty,” said Yasuaki Aoyama, chairman of Science Holdings Co., Ltd., which developed the device.

The Future Human Washing Machine is available year-round for hotel guests, though reservations and swimsuits are required. Children under elementary school age must be accompanied by a guardian.

Who else purchased ‘The Human Washing Machine’?

According to The Japan Times, electronics retailer Yamada Denki has also acquired the Mirai Human Washing Machine to attract more visitors to its stores. A demonstration unit is set on display along with an interactive experience corner for them.

Due to its novelty, the company plans to produce only about 50 units, with each priced at roughly 60 million yen (approximately 3.52 crore).

“We want people who could not visit the expo to experience this technology,” Aoyama said during a press conference.

How the Human Washing Machine Works

  1. Enter the Capsule: The user lies inside a 2.3-metre-long enclosed pod designed for full-body washing.
  2. Automatic Wash Starts: Microbubbles and a fine mist gently cleanse the entire body.
  3. Health Monitoring: Built-in sensors track the user’s vital signs throughout the session to ensure safety.
  4. Relaxation Experience: While the wash is in progress, calming visuals and soothing music are played inside the capsule to enhance the experience.
  5. Drying Process: Once done, the machine automatically dries the user.
  6. Exit Refreshed: In just 15 minutes, users emerge clean, relaxed, and fully refreshed, no towels or manual effort needed.
