Instagram has introduced a new feature called Instants, allowing users to share unedited, real-time photos directly with friends and followers. Unlike Stories or posts, the feature focuses on raw, unfiltered moments without edits, filters, or curated aesthetics.

The Instants feature is integrated into the platform’s direct messages (DMs), appearing in the bottom corner of the inbox. It is designed for situations where users may want to quickly share a photo privately without permanently saving it in a chat thread.

The experience is similar to Snapchat-style sharing, but built directly within Instagram.
How to send an Instant

To use the feature, users must first update their Instagram app. After opening the app, they can access their inbox by tapping the messenger icon.

In the bottom-right corner of the inbox, users will see a stacked photo icon labeled “Instant.” Tapping it opens the instant camera.

Unlike Instagram Stories, users are prompted to write a caption first before capturing a photo. Once the caption is added, users can take a photo using the camera button.

The image cannot be edited after capture, meaning what is clicked is sent as-is. If users are not satisfied with the image, they can retake it before sending.

Next, users can choose their audience, including options such as Close Friends or Mutuals, and then tap the send button. Multiple Instants can be shared in quick succession, with the camera remaining open for continuous use.

How to unsend instants

If an Instant is sent by mistake, users can tap an “undo” option that appears immediately after sending. This removes the image before it is viewed. However, once the recipient opens the Instant, it cannot be retracted.

How to turn off Instants

Users who wish to disable the feature can go to their profile, tap the three-line menu in the top right corner, and open Settings. From there, they can navigate to Content Preferences and toggle off the option labeled “Hide Instants in Inbox.”

Once disabled, Instants will no longer appear in the inbox, and users will not be able to view Instants sent by others. Alternatively, users can temporarily pause the feature by long-pressing the Instants section in the inbox and swiping right.
