AI educator and OpenAI founding member Andrej Karpathy has joined Anthropic, the executive said on Tuesday, May 19, as the company ramps up hiring amid intensifying competition in the generative artificial intelligence race.

Karpathy added that he remained “deeply passionate about education” and planned to resume work in that area later.
Anthropic, the company behind Claude chatbot, has been rapidly expanding its research and engineering teams as companies race to build more powerful large language models and AI agents.
Founded in 2021 by former OpenAI executives and siblings Dario Amodei and Daniela Amodei, Anthropic has emerged as one of the leading rivals to OpenAI and Google in the fast-growing AI sector.
Karpathy is widely known in the AI industry for his work in deep learning and computer vision. As the director of AI at Tesla, he previously led the computer vision team for the company’s autopilot division, overseeing areas including data collection, neural network training, and the deployment of AI systems that power driver-assistance features and full self-driving technology.
Before joining Tesla, Karpathy worked as a research scientist at OpenAI between January 2016 and June 2017, during the company’s early years before ChatGPT was publicly released.
Karpathy left Tesla in 2022 and later focused on AI education initiatives and online teaching content, becoming a prominent public voice explaining advances in generative AI and machine learning. He has 1.4 million subscribers on YouTube.
