OpenAI has launched Codex Micro, a limited-edition desktop keypad designed for developers using its artificial intelligence (AI) coding assistant, Codex, as the company expands its hardware ecosystem for AI-powered software development.
Priced at $230, the device has been developed in partnership with hardware maker Work Louder. It is aimed at developers who manage multiple AI coding agents simultaneously, providing physical controls to trigger common actions and monitor agent activity without switching between application windows.
Physical controls for AI agents
The Codex Micro features 13 mechanical switches, a rotary encoder, a planar joystick and a touch sensor. It connects via Bluetooth or USB-C and is compatible with Mac and Windows systems.
The keypad includes programmable shortcut keys for functions such as starting a new chat, push-to-talk, approving or rejecting AI actions and launching coding workflows. A dedicated approval button allows users to authorize an AI agent to perform tasks, while the rotary dial can be used to adjust AI reasoning levels.
Each programmable key also displays the status of an AI coding agent through RGB lighting. According to OpenAI, indigo indicates an idle agent, green marks an unread chat, blue shows an agent is thinking, light pink signals that user approval or input is required, and pink indicates an error.

The package includes the Codex Icon keyset with 32 custom keycaps, along with a USB-C cable.
Codex Micro is separate from the consumer hardware product that OpenAI is expected to unveil later. Reports have suggested the Sam Altman-led company is developing a ChatGPT-powered smart speaker that could compete with products such as Amazon Alexa, Google Home and Apple HomePod, with an announcement expected this year and availability projected for 2027.
