Apple used its annual Worldwide Developers Conference on Monday to announce what it is calling its most significant child safety update ever — and for once, the features live up to the billing.
The updates, arriving this autumn with iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27, land on the same day UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer gave Apple and Google a three-month deadline to introduce device-level controls that prevent children from viewing or sharing explicit images. The US Congress is also advancing the Kids Online Safety Act, which cleared the House Energy and Commerce Committee in March alongside a wave of school-district lawsuits over social media addiction. The timing, in other words, is no accident.
A child account, required for users under 13 and available for those up to 18, enables age-appropriate protections system-wide from the moment the device is set up. Parents are guided through account creation during the initial device setup and can choose to start their child with just a few essential apps, a curated set, or a custom selection.
This is the structural change that everything else builds on. Apple is no longer leaving it to parents to hunt through settings menus. The protection is built into setup itself.
The headline feature is Ask to Browse. It requires children to request parental permission before accessing a new website in Safari. When kids visit a new website, the parent will get a notification where they can approve the request with a single tap. This feature works across iPhone, iPad and Mac.
Think of it as Ask to Buy — but for the internet.
Apps can be added over time, and kids can get parental approval for app downloads with Ask to Buy. There are also tools for managing who children can connect to on Messages, FaceTime, and Phone, and parents can enable a setting that will require children to get permission before connecting with a new contact.
Communication Safety is being updated to blur gore and violence in Messages and FaceTime calls by default for users under 18. As with nudity, it will automatically blur content when gore or violence is detected in images and videos.
With Time Allowances, parents can manage the time that children spend in apps in the Entertainment, Games, and Social Media categories. Parents can set a limit based on the child’s age, with suggestions from the latest expert guidance. Daily Schedules let parents limit which apps children can access and when, based on time of day and day of the week.
Apple says parents will be able to quickly limit access during meals, outdoor play, and other times that “deserve full attention.”
Apple’s Vice President of Health and Fitness, Dr. Sumbul Desai, framed the updates as part of a broader approach to family safety: “Our approach to helping families create safer digital experiences is grounded in the belief that every child is unique. That’s why we build simple and intuitive tools, based on expert guidance, to let parents tailor their kids’ digital journey.”
Apple is not asking parents to opt in to safety anymore. Every feature above ships with child accounts — which are now mandatory for under-13s. The burden has shifted. Parents will have to actively loosen restrictions, not tighten them.
All features arrive with iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS Golden Gate this autumn.
